Can your cash flow support your year-end goals?

The business diagnosis and timeline need a review of resources: what money is expected to come in, which commitments it must cover and what capacity remains to support business goals.

What should you review in cash flow before planning for year-end?

On Day 371 of D365-IRL™, we reviewed expected inflows, projected outflows and resources committed across three periods: day-to-day operations, year-end and the start of January. With Karen, we connected that review with a question about goals: can the available cash flow support what we want to do?

From diagnosis to the capacity to execute

On Wednesday, September 30, we closed the month by connecting the business diagnosis, priorities and sales with the timeline. The conversation continued our preparation for drawing up specific plans.

Clarity about what we want to do opens another question: what resources do we have? An initiative needs a place on the calendar and must coexist with the commitments the business already has.

Karen's contribution brought that question to cash flow. The focus was on looking at incoming money alongside upcoming outflows and recognizing how much of that money already has a purpose.

Three reserves discussed in the session

Karen proposed protecting resources for three areas:

  • Day-to-day operations: payroll, suppliers and commitments that keep the business running
  • Year-end: obligations, taxes, inventory and planned promotions
  • The start of January: resources to begin the next period

The conversation did not establish a universal percentage or amount for each reserve. The idea was to make these uses visible before committing resources to new goals.

Looking at inflows alongside projected outflows also turns the timeline into a view of commitments. Both the amount of money expected and the timing of the planned payments matter.

Questions from the community

Participants shared questions about working with an accountant, learning to interpret financial information and understanding timing gaps between receipts and payments.

Another cash-flow situation came up: using advances from new customers to cover earlier obligations. It is recorded here as a community question, without identifying individuals or businesses or recommending that practice as a solution.

The discussion of accounting support was part of preparing to understand the business's position more clearly. This note preserves the shared themes without turning individual cases into tax, credit or financial instructions for other participants.

The announced next step

Day 371 was September's final preparatory session. October 1 and 2 were intended for continued preparation, with execution announced to begin on Monday, October 5.

The session left us with a concrete question: do the available resources support the plans we are putting on the timeline?

This note records the discussion and the announced schedule. It does not establish subsequent results or improvements in sales, profitability or savings.

Working definition · v0.1

RESERVES TO SUPPORT BUSINESS GOALS

Resources identified by their intended use: day-to-day operations, year-end commitments and the start of January. Making these uses visible helps assess the remaining capacity before committing money to new goals.
