When a tool can resolve a task, what do we need to keep learning to understand it, evaluate it and decide what to do with the result?

On Day 354 of D365-IRL, the conversation addressed Casa Steiner Tenerife, Waldorf education, anthroposophy and the relationship between human development and technology.

That encounter opened a question running through our exploration of the autonomous company: how are the people who will exercise that autonomy developed?

The educational reference serves here as a starting point for questions. This note does not evaluate the effectiveness of the Waldorf model or attribute results to Casa Steiner.

At D31, we propose bringing the reflection into work as well: what experiences allow judgment, creativity, responsibility and the ability to coexist with other perspectives to develop.

Learning to formulate the problem

An answer can be well presented and resolve an insufficient question.

Before using it, we need to understand what we are trying to achieve, what information is missing and what consequences acting on it would have.

That ability requires practice. Observing a situation, formulating an explanation, testing it against evidence and recognizing when we must change our minds.

Consider a person using AI to prepare a proposal. Besides reviewing the document, they can explain what problem they chose to address, what assumptions they made and why they consider their recommendation relevant.

Discussing those choices allows us to observe their judgment and help them develop it.

Developing autonomy requires room to think and making visible how decisions are made.

Creating conditions for exploration

In our conversation about leadership, we raised the importance of supporting individual distinctiveness: each person's own capabilities and perspectives.

Development needs opportunities to discover and put them into practice.

One person may find a connection others overlooked. Another may formulate a question that changes the problem. Another may imagine a different application for an existing capability.

To develop those contributions, we need time for exploration, feedback and opportunities to test.

Understandable limits are also necessary. Learners must know what they may experiment with, what they need to consult on and how to recognize that they should stop.

Support allows that space to expand gradually based on what the person demonstrates and understands.

Learning from consequences

“Your decisions, your consequences” introduces a developmental dimension: reviewing what we chose and taking responsibility for its effects.

An error can open a learning opportunity when we can reconstruct what happened. What information we had. What we interpreted. What alternative we discarded. What we would do differently.

Leadership as a mentor and real-time coach helps sustain that review. Its intervention should allow the person to understand the situation better and develop capability for the next decision.

The 51/49 rule needs that human foundation. Retaining sovereignty over a tool requires being able to question its answers and recognize the limits of our own understanding.

Creativity as a horizon for development

“Creativity is the last human frontier.” #Frontier2051

At D31, we use this thesis to guide a developmental question: what conditions allow people to imagine possibilities and construct their own responses to the unknown?

We propose observing that ability in concrete activities: formulating alternatives, connecting experiences, exploring a question and turning an idea into a test that can be reviewed.

Technology can participate in that process. The person needs to retain direction over what they seek and judgment to assess what they find.

The Day 354 conversation thus opens a connection between education, leadership and organizational transformation. The autonomous company requires people prepared to exercise the autonomy they receive.

What opportunities does your organization offer today for learning to decide, beyond learning to execute?

Before adding another layer of technology, it helps to see how ready the organization is to decide, coordinate and execute.
